The 2022 State of IT Operations Survey Results Are In

Two years ago, most of us got locked out of our offices due to a global health crisis we expected to last mere weeks. But even the darkest clouds have silver linings. Though several businesses initially faced a range of pandemic-specific challenges, many have since transitioned into a world that’s embraced innovative ways to be productive and communicate.

As an example, we at Automox shifted to a 100% distributed work environment and implemented sweeping changes at an unprecedented pace and scale. Of course, we certainly weren’t the only ones.

Looking back, it’s inspiring to see how many companies embraced new, location-agnostic environments and rewrote suddenly outdated strategies to influence and push forward a dynamic, modern way of working.

To analyze and explore the most recent changes in IT operations, we worked with AimPoint Group to produce (for the third year running) the State Of IT Operations Report. This year’s version is dubbed Powering the Modern Workforce.

Our researchers surveyed hundreds of industry professionals to find out how they’re continuing to revamp business processes, ditch legacy infrastructures, and support sustainable operations. We compiled the results into 19 pages of insights, with industry data on the hybrid workforce, endpoint management, advanced automation, BYOD and cloud adoption, and more.

And speaking of silver linings, it’s clear IT teams are discovering ways to do their jobs with speed and ease while serving as strategic business drivers for their organizations. But, no doubt, we have more work to do.

Here’s a sneak peek at some of our findings:

  • 58% of the surveyed companies are pivoting to permanent hybrid work models

  • 60% of organizations are using more than ten tools and solutions for endpoint management

  • Within the next two years, 99% of surveyed organizations expect to use cloud-native solutions to meet almost all endpoint management needs

Still, 93% of IT operations teams still rely on some degree of labor-intensive scripting to automate endpoint management. And, as per the figure below, nearly two-thirds of respondents describe their automation capabilities as “medium.” Their rankings indicate most solutions still require manual intervention.

This has to change.

2022 State of IT Operations Report Preview

The 2022 State of IT Operations Report uncovers some of the major challenges faced by ITOps teams across several industries.

The Modern Workforce is Hybrid

As mentioned above, companies are shifting to permanent hybrid work models. Clearly, there’s growth in the number of organizations where over 40% of employees work remotely some of the time. After a decrease from 2020’s temporary high of 70.7%, this measure is again on the rise.

This means the strain on IT is going to continue. Adopting tactical automation can ease heavy-lifting and offer substantial support – especially when it comes to endpoint management.

Endpoint Management Tooling Is…Messy

As you can see, six out of ten respondents this year reported using more than ten tools to manage their endpoint device fleet. Another quarter uses slightly fewer tools. Both groups struggle with tool sprawl and inefficiency.

Endpoint Management Capabilities Are Being Tested

Today, IT operations teams in enterprises of all sizes are challenged. A large majority say there’s significant room for improvement when it comes to their endpoint management capabilities.

Summary of 2022 IT Operations Survey Findings

The current trends promise to increase the need for solutions that will make it faster and easier for IT operations teams to manage more complex environments. Let’s take the following stats into consideration one more time:

  • Companies are pivoting to permanent hybrid models (while the number of enterprises with 80% or more of their employees working remotely has decreased, this is balanced by an uptick (58%) in hybrid work models)

  • 84% rely on five or more tools and 60% use more than ten for endpoint management

  • 84% of enterprises struggle to manage their endpoints

So, How Can ITOps Teams Prepare for What’s to Come?

Instead of focusing more time and money forcing on-premises legacy tools to work for them, 99% of survey participants plan to switch to cloud-native solutions within the next two years. IT teams are considering new ways to achieve the right level of efficiency, automate the soul-crushing manual work that prevents strategic task completion, and adopt a cloud-native approach to gain up-to-date visibility and control over dispersed and shifting IT environments.
